Tangential, but sort of related to your post, have a listen to this song. I like music with a message.

"Well, the first time that I raced my qualifying was a shame

I started out way in the back and came back 'bout the same

Pulled her in the pit, couldn't look my my daddy in the eye

He said, 'If you quit now, son, it's gonna haunt you all your life'

See, it ain't about the money or even being number one

You gotta know when it's all over, you did the best you could've done"

That doesn't appear all that tangential to me.

Sounds like they're singing about life, through racing.

Dumping out the engine parts and having his son tell them what they're for; taking him to races and going over what's happening and the nuances like who has the better car and who has the better plan, instinct, desire etc... that's what we're here for.

Perhaps not specifically cars and racing, but life. What everything is for. WHY everything is for.

And we won't have all the answers, and we cannot give everything to you, either.

Which is why he had to get his own car, though he got help putting it together.

HE had to drive his own qualification, and race his own race, and take his losses.

And this dad got to be there during his son's stop in the pits, his lowest.

To make sure his son knew that it wasn't the end and there should be no shame, assuming he dusts himself off and tries again.

Wonderful song.
