It’s the ultimate compliment, to be spoken of after we have moved on to the next chapter.
I have little doubt he is still with you all. His voice lives on in part in your writings. And his memory will be kept for generations to come in your family. Same as my grandfather and grandmother are remembered and revered in mine.
That’s a true legacy.
Thanks for sharing. It brought back such great memories for this patron.
Man, I can FEEL the connection through your words. I never knew either of my grandfathers. I'm old enough that one was killed in WWII. The other committed suicide when I was less than 2 years old. I'm sad that I never got to know them. Makes me hopeful about meeting my own grandkids in a few more years.
I somehow missed the part of this being a repost, quickly scrolling to the meat of the story and while reading, I was thinking, "Didn't I read this before? Or did I read something very similar somewhere else?" I scrolled down to the bottom to see if I had "liked" it, and I hadn't. Scrolled up to the top, and I saw the repost mention. Duh.
I'm glad you were able to talk to him some. I don't remember really talking with my grandfathers. I had a very mostly-male-absent vibe while I was growing up. I did have some grandfathers, just didn't talk with them. And they've died now. I did, however, over the years get the responsibility to talk with my grandmother who could never get off the phone with people because she was lonely. Everyone else was too busy, it was my "job." I did get to hear the same stories over and over and in different ways. The most memorable one was when she was growing up in Scotland and ditched a very young Sean Connery in the movie theater during their date.
I hope he is still with us.
He certainly knew his stuff about raising kids. And music. And dancing. A wonderful man.
His legacy is, though his body is not.
We still talk about him regularly, which seems like one hell of an achievement.

My grandparents passed before my kids came along. Only a grandmother on their mom’s side is still here.
As for their grandparents, my wife’s stepdad is number one. Papa Bear. My dad is second: PeePaw
