These are my favorite lines, "love is not a victory march

it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah"

Hallelujah to me often feels like a prayer when no other words will do. It surpasses awe. It flows deeper than grief. It's the recognition of a power greater than our human capacity to understand- a power that can render us on our knees with gratitude or loss.

I didn't realize how many different versions there were until I watched the documentary about this song on Netflix. Truly amazing! Thanks for reminding us of this beautiful piece of art that's truly found its way into many hearts.

First off, THERE'S A DOCUMENTARY?!

Second, I feel that about Hallelujah.

To me, it's acceptance. It's trust and letting go, allowing for Him to take over for a bit.

It's relief, it's grief, it's love, and it's pain.

And the acceptance of them all, and admitting I am not in control, I must have faith.

It's all that and more.

So, faith then.

I love the comparison to awe. That's perfect.

What else is awe than revelation that there is beauty and there is wonder? Far grander than one can imagine at any point in time?

Just.

Yes.

One line that gets me, just utterly destroys me is

"I've seen your flag on the marble arch"

Now, who knows what he meant. Maybe it's in that documentary.

But what follows, those two you love, helps:

"love is not a victory march

it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah"

"I've seen your flag on the marble arch" - one thing feels obvious, that's symbolizing victory.

In what way?

Well, from what I "understand" about Leonard, his lyrics and messaging had heavy influences in Jewish history.

And so I see this as the Arch of Titus.

That arch symbolizes the Roman victory and the fall of Jerusalem.

Again, symbolism, so not messaging, I'd imagine.

She came in, she conquered, destroyed, knocked down his walls, his temples, his being, his beliefs, his religion, everything.

Just her. Her, as the concept, as the personification of All.

And that's his recognition she now claims him, all of him, everything. He is hers, no question.

But don't just celebrate and move on, triumphantly.

"Love is not a victory march"

And here he is, helpless, paralyzed by awe, watching his world do with him her will, with both hope and terror, understanding she could destroy him, but he wants nothing more than her anyways. Hence the awe. Hence the submission.

Hence: "It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah"

Anyway.

I adore that song. All of it.

And we have similar favorite lines. Mine just adds one prior.

So that was AWESOME to find out.

Apologies for the book...

Ok -- I didn't realize there were so many versions of this song and that they were all so different. BUT this does explain why I could never truly learn the lyrics.
