Behind Closed Doors: Death, The Joker, And Character
Who Are You When the World Isn't Watching?
People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.
Actions In Solitude
When the spotlight fades, the audience disperses, and we're left with nothing but our reflections, who are we when no one's watching?
We often present a version of ourselves to the world – the writer, the actor, the professional. We wear a mask, a necessary one, perhaps, but it's not always the real us. Consider the riveting antagonists in films, like Heath Ledger's Joker or the formidable Wolf who turned out to be Death from the most recent Puss In Boots movie (which was WONDERFUL by the way).
Off-screen, these actors are far removed from their on-screen personas. That's the magic of performance. But what about us? Who are we beyond these roles?
My stepdad once caught me off guard with a statement that has echoed through my life: "Character is who you are when nobody's looking." As a kid, I didn't get it. I thought 'character' was something from a TV show. Character was a noun, an individual with the plural being characters. But over the years, this phrase has become a cornerstone of my understanding of integrity and self.
Let's be honest – we all have our moments. I'm the first to admit that I've made more than my share of mistakes, and I'm no genius. What I've learned, I've learned the hard way, by paying attention, often after stumbling repeatedly over the same hurdle. But isn't that life? A series of trials, errors, and, hopefully, growth.
Who you are in solitude – that's the real test. It's easy to uphold morals and values in public, but what about in private? My stepdad, despite our rocky relationship early on, taught me this valuable lesson. He wasn't stopping me from all the things I wanted to do – like playing baseball or going to school – but from the things I shouldn't have been doing.
This concept of character ties into the very essence of our actions and beliefs. Do we trespass on closed properties just because no one's around to see? Do we lie, knowing it alters someone else's reality, and not just when we're likely to get caught? Do we lie to ourselves in order to try and escape painful truths? These are the questions that define us.
Imagine if everything you did in private was suddenly exposed. How would you feel? Beyond the invasion of privacy, would you be proud of what was revealed? This isn’t about paranoia; it's about understanding that our actions, observed or not, define us.
And let’s not kid ourselves, our actions are always observed. We know what we do and what we omit. We know what we say and what we don’t. We know what we think and what we try and pretend we never have thought.
Embracing this reality can be empowering. It's a matter of gratitude and acceptance, aligning our private selves with the persona we present to the world. It's not striving for unattainable perfection, but about recognizing our flaws and working on them.
Life is about overcoming struggles, finding joy in the journey, and pushing that proverbial boulder up the hill, much like Sisyphus – a punishment that unexpectedly turns into a purpose.
So, as we navigate our lives, let's ponder this: who are we when the cameras are off, and we're alone with our thoughts? Are we the people we want to be, or is there a disconnect? Let's strive to be individuals of character, both in the limelight and in the shadows.
Until next time,
