New Years Posts Are The Worst
Ah, a new year. New me, too, right? Hopefully. We should all want to continue growing and adapting to what’s coming. Change is inevitable and should be embraced, though slow and steady will win this race. Don’t change simply to change, that’s tiresome. It’s also the perfect segue into talking about time horizons.
You may be thinking “What the hell are you talking about,” and you’d be right! So let me tell you about it while I continue to pretend I went back and added a good segue or hope you forget there isn’t one there.
Picture this: a landscape viewed through the lens of a camera. When the lens is zoomed in, every detail is magnified, every imperfection scrutinized. This is akin to our daily lives, where our immediate concerns and challenges loom large, often overwhelming us. But as the new year beckons, it invites us to zoom out, to see our lives as part of a broader tapestry.
Within our daily lives, our daily routines, our vision narrows. Like a horse with blinders, we see only what's directly in front of us – the next deadline, the next bill, the next immediate need. This short-term view, while necessary for day-to-day survival, can sometimes skew our understanding of what truly matters. This is short-term vision.
Now, imagine shifting your gaze to a more distant horizon. With this shift, the immediate problems that once seemed insurmountable become mere blips in the grand scheme of things. This is the power of the long-term perspective. This power comes from lifting your eyes from the ground and gazing at the stars, understanding that today's trials are just part of a longer journey, a longer arch.
The new year is a natural moment for this shift. It's a time when we're encouraged to set resolutions, to look ahead, and to imagine what could be. It's an opportunity to reassess our priorities, to align our actions with our deeper values, and to contemplate the legacy we wish to leave.
Life, of course, requires a dance between these two perspectives. We cannot live solely in the future, nor can we be perpetually fixated on the immediate. The art of living well involves balancing these two – addressing the needs of the present while being guided by the vision of the future.
As you step into this new year, I encourage you to embrace both the immediate and the distant. Let your day-to-day actions be informed by your long-term aspirations. When the challenges of the present moment feel overwhelming, remind yourself of the bigger picture. And when you're dreaming of the future, don't forget to take the small, practical steps needed to get there.
Remember that every big journey begins with a single step, and every broad vision is composed of small, focused actions. May this new year bring you the clarity to see both the forest and the trees, and the wisdom to navigate between them with grace and purpose.
With love and hopes for a year filled with meaningful perspectives,
Dad
