You’re A Good Boy and I Love You
Hey Buddy, it’s getting late.
It’s time to start winding down.
Before you close your eyes.
Before you drift off to sleep.
Daddy has something to say.
You’re a Good Boy.
And I Love You.
I know, I know.
Those words now bring a scowl and not a smile.
They signal the end of play.
And mean you must rest now.
You don’t find that to be good news.
But even still, You’re a Good Boy.
And I Love You.
They mean so much more than that.
They mean more than you know.
That frown means you expect them now.
And understand what time it is.
And that always and forever you remain a Good Boy.
And I Love You.
Those eight words are but the start of it.
Many more I wish I could say.
But for now we’ll keep that mantra.
For it will be something you never forget.
You will always be my Good Boy.
And I will always Love You.
Daddy’s don’t cry they say.
We remain tough, stoic, sometimes cold.
Yet you know better of course.
Because you know what I am saying each night.
Because you’re a Good Boy
And I Love You
You’re my best boy, my big boy.
My strong boy and my fast boy.
You’re the bravest boy and my heroic boy.
You’re my helpful boy and my coolest boy.
You’re my sweetest boy and my polite boy.
You’re the tallest boy and my smartest boy.
You’re my hard working boy and my fixer boy.
You give me my high fives and my hugs.
You have the best snuggles ever and you hold the best hand too.
You teach me how to spell new words and show me how to count.
You point out the moon when it’s there and tell me not to look at the sun.
You don’t let me run in the parking lot, you protect me from the cars.
You walk with me at night and in the dark so I don’t get scared.
You tell me monsters aren’t real and that the spiders won’t get me.
You keep me safe from burns and scrapes and you make sure I know I am loved.
And all these are my job normally but you watched me and learned.
And my boy I am so proud of how Good you have become.
And how much you want to be that Good Boy.
That great boy. That fun boy and that brave boy.
That helpful boy and that sweet boy.
That snuggly boy and that protector boy.
That’s what it means when I say
You’re a Good Boy.
And I Love You.
Hi there,
I am truly grateful for your support and interest in my writing.
It's been an amazing journey with my 'Dad Explains' Substack, and I hope you're finding value in the insights I share as I navigate this beautiful, often confusing, thing we call life.
I genuinely want my work to reach as many people as possible, and to make that happen, I've introduced a paid subscription option.
Your subscription not only supports the work, but it also gives you access to exclusive content, discussions, and more - a closer look at the world through the lens of a dad trying to figure things out.
However, I understand that not everyone might be in a position to upgrade to a paid subscription at this moment.
If you're facing financial constraints, or there's another reason why you can't subscribe just yet, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Write to me at dad@dadexplains.life, and I'll add you on as a paid subscriber for a bit for free.
Remember, we're all in this together. Let's continue to learn, grow, and navigate this journey together.
Best,
Andrew Ussery
